Dorothy Carlton Center's Life Skills teacher, Cynthia Ortega, was named Carlton Center's Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes her for her unwavering dedication to her students and her passion for her career.
Mrs. Ortega is a First-Generation College Student. She graduated at University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Communications and graduated Texas Tech University with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Special Education. She is currently working on finishing her principal certification at Lamar University.
Mrs. Ortega was inspired to work in special education at the age of 17.
Paraprofessionals that nominated Mrs. Ortega stated the following:

The Director of Carlton Center and staff surprised Ortega with the news on December 20, 2025.
